Steve started it all way back in 1989 when he decided that working ’9 to 5′ was not the way forward!
After spending some time working at outdoor centres abroad and in the UK he started on his journey to create ACTIVITIES AWAY as we know it today.
We took the time to ask him some questions…
What activity have you been teaching for the longest?
I started teaching sailing but was not very good at it, so swapped for canoeing and climbing back in 1989. I have been paddling since I was about 13 and had climbed most spare weekends since I was about 15, I had always sailed but bigger boats that my Dad owned, I didnt like falling out of sailing dinghies!
What activity do you enjoy the most?
I actually enjoy jet ski nowadays, it seems like so much less effort than canoeing and climbing!
I really enjoy down hill ski-ing as well, this is one sport I don’t teach and need to get better at!
What are you actually qualified in?
When I started in this business you only needed enthusism and a cheeky smile! Nowadays we need you to be experienced and qualified.
I am a PWC INSTRUCTOR TRAINER for the RYA and I guess this is the highest award/post I have as it means I can run RYA INSTRUCTOR TRAINING and ASSESSMENT COURSES for the PWC (Jetski) scheme and I am just in the process of becoming an RYA CENTRE INSPECTOR which should hopefully be confirmed in early 2014.
I also personally hold an RYA POWERBOAT & SAFETY BOAT INSTRUCTORS CERTIFICATE, AN RYA PWC INSTRUCTORS CERTIFICATE, THE RYA INTERMEDIATE POWERBOAT AWARD, THE RYA COASTAL SKIPPERS (theory) AWARD, THE RYA DAY SKIPPER (theory) CERTIFICATE, A BCU INSTRUCTORS AWARD, the MLTB SINGLE PITCH SUPERVISORS AWARD. I also have an OCR Certificate in OFF SITE SAFETY MANAGEMENT, a FIRST AID CERTIFICATE, an ENHANCED CRB CHECK, and various other things like a CERTIFICATE IN SAFE GUARDING CHILDREN IN SPORTS, VHF RADIO HANDLERS CERT, RYA BASIC NAVIGATION AND SAFETY CERT, FOOD HYGIENE CERT and probably a TUFTY CLUB BADGE FOR CROSSING THE ROAD!
Do you have any academic qualifications?
I have a Masters Degree in Outdoor Management Development from Sheffield Hallam University with Post Grad quals in Tourism and Hospitality management.
I think I got a couple of ‘o’ levels but I know I failed maths!
What do you see the future holding for you in the next 10 years?
I have a plan (which I am keeping to myself for now) but in ten years time I think I will still be in this business but I might be working across multiple sites and possibly ski ing a lot more – but that is all I am saying at the moment!
Finally, do you know any jokes?
Yep, How much did the pirate pay for his ear rings?
